Five young girls, daughters of the legendary Amazon warriors, set out for a day of swimming and play at Mirror of the Moon Lake, deep in the Brazilian Amazon. What begins as an ordinary adventure soon turns into a dangerous encounter when warriors from a rival village appear. Far from helpless, however, the girls must rely on courage, intelligence, teamwork, and determination to find their way back home through the forest.
Written by Indigenous author Yaguarê Yamã, a member of the Maraguá people of the Brazilian Amazon, Warrior-Girls draws inspiration from Indigenous oral traditions and from the legendary Icamiabas, the warrior women whose stories are associated with the origins of the name “Amazon.” Yamã is one of Brazil’s leading Indigenous writers, with works selected for major reading programs and the White Ravens Catalogue. Through an engaging adventure, the book highlights friendship, bravery, cooperation, and respect for Indigenous cultures and knowledge.
Taisa Borges’s illustrations immerse readers in the lush landscapes of the Amazon rainforest and bring the young protagonists vividly to life. Rich in color and detail, the artwork reinforces both the beauty of the natural setting and the girls’ strength and determination. Combining adventure, cultural heritage, and empowering female characters, Warrior-Girls offers readers a captivating introduction to Indigenous Brazilian storytelling while celebrating courage and resilience.
