About the book

First published in 1726, Gulliver’s Travels is widely regarded as the masterpiece of Jonathan Swift, one of the greatest writers in the English language. Narrated in the first person, the novel follows physician and sailor Lemuel Gulliver as he embarks on a series of extraordinary voyages to remote and imaginary lands. Over the course of his adventures, he encounters tiny inhabitants no taller than six inches, giants towering over entire cities, a floating island devoted to science, and a society ruled by intelligent horses. Behind its fantastic premise lies a sharp and enduring reflection on human nature, society, and power.

Through satire, humor, and adventure, Swift explores themes such as justice, politics, science, technology, civilization, and barbarism. Each destination becomes a mirror through which readers are invited to question values, behaviors, and social structures that often appear irrational when viewed from a different perspective. More than three centuries after its publication, the novel remains remarkably relevant for its wit and insight.

This adaptation by Ronaldo Simões Coelho brings the classic to young readers while preserving the spirit of Swift’s original work. Marilia Pirillo’s illustrations enrich the narrative with expressive artwork that captures both the wonder and the irony of Gulliver’s travels. The edition is further enhanced by an introduction by acclaimed Brazilian author João Anzanello Carrascoza and a post-reading discussion by Peter O’Sagae, offering readers valuable literary context. Together, text and image create an engaging gateway to one of the most influential adventure novels in world literature.
