About the book

Written by the acclaimed author Ana Maria Machado, this story is narrated by two characters, in alternate moments: Andreia and Rodrigo. The two share their discoveries about their own family, “very different people.” To them, everyone has a secret identity: Andreia’s grandmother is a princess; her grandfather, a pirate; her mother, a fairy; and her father can be either a genius or a giant. Andreia and Rodrigo show great familiarity with the universe of children’s literature, referring to Snow White, The Princess and the Pea, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and Peter Pan. Fun and poetic, the work draws attention to the changing social roles of women, men and the elderly, and suggests that magic and charm can be found in small acts of everyday life.
